For years University District residents have voiced concern over the lack of a City of Detroit ordinance regulating short term rentals (STRs) and the large and late-night parties, parking troubles, gun fire, etc. associated with the STRs already in the neighborhood. Our UDCA Residential Standards, Special Assessment District, Safety & Security and Block Captains committees have all followed the long, slow progress of the City of Detroit’s development of an ordinance on short term rentals. Over the years we have shared residents’ concerns, questions, and complaints about STRs with City officials. Most of these concerns were based on neighbors’ firsthand experience with STRs in the UD. Our District 2 Councilmember, Angela Callowaym and her staff have been particularly helpful in assuring our concerns are heard.
The current version of the ordinance has been submitted to the City Council to vote, but there is currently no official date scheduled for the vote.
