We in the University District love our neighborhood and our neighbors. We are committed to help create and maintain the quiet beauty that is found in simple and natural things. By being mindful of habitats for wildlife in an urban setting, we help to connect residents to the serenity they can experience in Nature.
Over the course of the past 3 months, UDCA has had a “small but mighty” team of about 10 folks participate in neighborhood beautification efforts, with the goal of having work complete before the Home Tour. Accomplishments include:
- picked up solid waste and vegetation, including tidying up the Palmer Park Prep schoolyard garden before school started
- completed maintenance and improvement of a large, native & perennial planter box in our neighborhood (in the Savon Foods parking lot at Curtis & Livernois)
- designed and installed a new sign in the planter box that welcomes people to the neighborhood. The sign says, This raised bed garden is filled with native, perennial and pollinator-friendly flowers, herbs and plants to support wildlife. Volunteers from the University District have created it for your enjoyment. Savon Foods provides water for the garden.
Resources to repair the planter box, create a new sign and to refresh and maintain flower beds and pots were provided by grants to UDCA from the Kresge Foundation/Live 6 Alliance and Green Living Science.
